The inspiration, and the intended audience, for my remediated Teaching philosophy video where my students, their families, and the members of our community. Having the opportunity, over the past five years, to work in the city that raised me, has been critical in my developing into the educator I am today. Throughout the video I embedded the voices whether verbally, alphabetically, and visually of my students because I want them to know how much they matter. One of my goals for this video was to show my students, and our learning community, what our youth are able to accomplish when they are not only supported, but given the autonomy to create. Being part of a district that’s been taken over the state, we’re often mandated to focus on numbers...graduation rates, attendance, test scores...to name but a few. This prioritization stifles the voices of our youth, especially when it comes to thinking, communicating, and processing in ways that don’t adhere to a standardized format. The images used throughout my video are completely student centered. For example, the pictures from our Human Rights Violation fair shows my students interacting with other students, teachers, and other members of our school. This project was so important in enabling my students to have an authentic audience and for that to consist of people they are learning with each and every day. I also included images of student artwork, as well as those when we have guest speakers visit our room. For future students who will someday see this video I’ve created, I wanted to show them that who they are, the experiences and community they bring with them, are valued. I hope that with this video I am able to show overall that the work I do should never be tackled alone. We are a community, and this belief, is what creates the change our youth need.
